Phuket and Krabi are the two most popular Andaman Coast destinations — and almost every first-time visitor to southern Thailand wonders which to choose. The honest answer: they’re quite different, and the right choice depends entirely on what kind of holiday your family wants.
Phuket: Size, Infrastructure and Beaches for Everyone
Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and acts as a self-contained resort destination. It has an international airport with direct flights from across Asia and Europe, a wide range of hotels from budget guesthouses to ultra-luxury resorts, and beaches for every taste.
Patong is the busiest — noisy, energetic, great for shopping and nightlife but not the best for families with young children. Kamala and Surin are quieter and more upscale. Nai Harn in the south is the local favourite — calm waters and fewer crowds.
Phuket is best for families who want convenience: everything is easy to find, restaurants cater to international tastes, and the water parks, elephant shows and tiger zoos (though we recommend avoiding those) are all on the island.
Krabi: Dramatic Scenery and a Quieter Pace
Krabi’s calling card is its landscape — towering karst limestone cliffs rising from emerald water, remote beaches accessible only by longtail boat, and the famous Railay Beach, reachable only by sea. For families who value stunning scenery over resort amenities, Krabi wins easily.
Ao Nang is the main beach town — more relaxed than Patong but still with plenty of restaurants and shops. From here, longtail boats depart for the Four Islands tour, one of Thailand’s best snorkelling day trips.
Krabi works best for active families: kayaking through mangroves, rock climbing the cliffs (beginner routes are genuinely family-friendly), and island-hopping by boat.
Our Recommendation
If you have 7+ days, do both — fly into Phuket, spend 3–4 days, then take a ferry or minivan to Krabi for the rest. This is our most popular Andaman itinerary. Ask us to plan yours.
