Dan Sai is home to the famous Phi Ta Khon ghost-mask festival and the 16th-century stupa of Phra That Si Song Rak, a monument to peace between two ancient kingdoms. Phra That Si Song Rak
This whitewashed Lan Xang-style stupa is one of the most historically meaningful monuments in the northeast. Raised between 1560 and 1563 on the banks of the Man River, it was built jointly by the king of Ayutthaya and the king of Vientiane as a sacred witness to their pledge of peace and mutual defence against Burmese expansion. Locals hold it in deep reverence to this day.

An early start rewards you with one of Loei's signature experiences: sunrise and a rolling sea of mist seen from the summit of Phu Ruea. As the light comes up you can explore the park's distinctive rock formations, Shiva Rock, Turtle Rock and the Tray Rock, and pay respects at the Buddha image crowning the peak. The air at the top is genuinely crisp, a rare treat in Thailand.

Wat Somdet Phu Ruea Ming Mueang
Cradled among the folded mountains, this temple is a showcase of fine craftsmanship. Its ordination hall is built and carved entirely from teak, while the reclining Buddha, the vihara and the naga balustrades are sculpted from Mekong jade-stone. Chiang Khan Skywalk (Phu Khok Ngio)
Perched more than 80 metres above the Mekong, roughly the height of a 30-storey building, this glass-floored walkway stretches over 100 metres out into thin air. From here you look down on the confluence where the Hueang River meets the Mekong and marks the Thai-Lao border, a thrilling and panoramic vantage point.

Kaeng Khut Khu & Mekong sunset cruise
Kaeng Khut Khu is a scenic bend in the river where rapids surface in the dry season and riverside stalls sell Chiang Khan's famous treats, from crystallised coconut to soft handmade quilts. As the day cools, board a longtail boat to drift along the Mekong and watch the sun sink behind the Lao hills, the river turning copper and rose.
