This unhurried journey threads together the ancient Mon city of Lamphun, the temple-strewn ruins of Sukhothai — Thailand's first capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and the quiet limestone waterfalls of the western hills. It is a route for travellers who want history they can walk through, not read about.
This is the route to take if you want to understand where Thailand actually began. Centuries before the grand temples of Bangkok rose along the Chao Phraya, two kingdoms set the foundations of Thai art, faith and language: the Mon city of Hariphunchai at Lamphun, and the kingdom of Sukhothai, whose name means 'the dawn of happiness.' On this trip you travel through both. You will stand among brick stupas worn soft by seven hundred years, watch the famous walking Buddha of Sukhothai seem to step out of the stone, and trace the elegant lotus-bud spires that became the signature of an entire artistic golden age.
Between the great heritage sites, the itinerary slips into the quieter, greener side of the western provinces — limestone waterfalls cascading down forested cliffs, a serene temple risen from a long-abandoned ruin, and an unseen landmark that emerges from a reservoir only when the waters fall in the dry season. Drive south into the wild Li district and the forests of Mae Ping National Park. Here, in the still waters at the tail of the Bhumibol reservoir, lies one of Thailand's quiet wonders: the ruins of a village resettled in 1952, which surface only when the dry-season waters recede, usually around February. When conditions allow, a gentle boat trip reveals old foundations and the silhouettes of giant rain trees standing in the shallows.

Ko Luang Waterfall
A short distance on, Ko Luang Waterfall tumbles in seven tiers down a twenty-metre limestone cliff into a wide pool below. Because the water carries dissolved limestone, the rock here is dressed in living stone — stalactites and mineral curtains that give the falls an otherworldly, cave-like beauty. It flows year-round and stays cool even in the heat.

Wat Phiphat Mongkhon
Crossing into Sukhothai province, pause at this serene temple in the Thung Saliam district. Once a forgotten ruin lost in the rice fields — its ancient foundations and old chedi buried more than a metre underground — it has been lovingly restored into a tranquil, beautifully kept sanctuary, a quiet prelude to the great historical park to come.

Khlong Lan Waterfall, Kamphaeng Phet
After breakfast, drive into Kamphaeng Phet province to one of the region's most photographed falls. Khlong Lan plunges some ninety-five metres down a broad cliff face, fed by mountain streams that gather above into a long green pool. In the rainy season a fine mist hangs in the air; year-round, the lower basin is a fine place to cool off beneath the forest canopy.
