Chiang Mai is one of Thailand’s most family-friendly destinations. Surrounded by mountains, temples, and friendly locals, it offers a pace of life that feels nothing like Bangkok — and that’s exactly why families love it.
Day 1: Old City Temples & Night Bazaar
Start your first morning at Wat Chedi Luang, a magnificent 14th-century temple right in the heart of the Old City. Entry is free for children under 10. Walk the moat road, stop for fresh mango sticky rice at a street stall, then head to the famous Saturday Walking Street (or Sunday if your timing allows) for handicrafts, local food, and a relaxed evening.
Stay close to the Old City — Nimman Road has several excellent family hotels with pools, which the kids will appreciate after a long first day.
Day 2: Doi Suthep & Elephant Sanctuary
Rise early and head up to Doi Suthep Temple. The 309-step naga staircase is a gentle challenge that older kids enjoy; younger ones can take the funicular. The views over Chiang Mai from the top are breathtaking.
In the afternoon, visit one of Chiang Mai’s ethical elephant sanctuaries. We recommend the Elephant Nature Park — you’ll feed, bathe and walk alongside rescued elephants. Children find this the highlight of the entire trip. Book at least two weeks ahead during peak season.
Day 3: Cooking Class & Market Morning
Finish your stay with a morning visit to Warorot Market — a local wet market filled with dried fruits, spices, and snacks. Many families pick up a bag of dried longan or mango to take home.
In the afternoon, join a family cooking class. Most classes run 3–4 hours and cover 4–5 dishes. Children aged 7 and above can usually participate fully. You’ll leave knowing how to make pad thai, green curry and mango sticky rice from scratch.
Practical Tips
- Best time to visit: November to February (cool season) — daytime temperatures of 20–28°C are perfect for families.
- Getting around: Songthaews (red pickup trucks) are cheap and easy. For families, a private driver for the day costs around ฿1,500–2,000.
- Where to eat: Huen Phen for traditional Northern Thai food; Ristr8to for adult coffee while kids enjoy the park next door.
