High on the cool green ridges of Phetchabun, Khao Kho is where Thailand wakes beneath a slow tide of cloud. Over three unhurried days you will watch the sun rise over Phu Thap Boek, stand inside the glittering mosaic temple of Wat Pha Sorn Kaew, walk the cliffs of Phu Hin Rong Kla, and linger over coffee with the mountains spread out below.
Khao Kho sits in the highlands of Phetchabun province, the natural threshold between central Thailand and the Isan plateau, and it has quietly become one of the country's most beloved cool-weather escapes. From November to February the valleys fill each dawn with a soft sea of mist, the air turns crisp, and hillsides bloom with margaret daisies and hydrangeas. It is a landscape made for slowing down: winding mountain roads, container cafes perched on 180-degree viewpoints, and ridge-top temples that seem to float above the clouds. This itinerary trades the rush of a group coach for the ease of a private vehicle, letting you set the pace around the light and the weather.
We have built these three days around the mountains' two great moods — the spiritual and the wild. You will pay your respects at Wat Pha Sorn Kaew, an extraordinary contemporary temple sheathed in millions of mosaic tiles, and at the royal Kanchanaphisek stupa crowning the ridge. Then the land turns rugged at Phu Hin Rong Kla, where forest paths lead to dramatic cliff viewpoints and curious knobbled rock fields once used as a mountain stronghold. Between the highlights there is time for the things that make Khao Kho special: a sunrise you will not forget, a wind-turbine plateau, and a hot drink while the fog rolls past your table.

We collect you and head north into Phetchabun province, climbing steadily from the central plains toward the cool green highlands of Khao Kho. The drive itself is part of the pleasure, as rice fields give way to forested ridges and switchback mountain roads.

A stylish hillside cafe built from converted shipping containers, Pino Latte commands a sweeping 180-degree view across the mountains of Khao Kho. We pause here for good coffee and sweet bakery, with the distinctive silhouette of Wat Pha Sorn Kaew visible across the valley — a gentle introduction to the landscape you have come to see.

Wat Pha Sorn Kaew
One of Thailand's most striking modern temples, Wat Pha Sorn Kaew rises from a ridge enshrining relics of the Buddha and serving as a meditation retreat. Its great white Buddhas sit serenely above the clouds, while the temple's surfaces shimmer with millions of hand-set mosaic tiles, broken china and coloured glass. It is both a place of devotion and a work of living art.

An early start carries you to Phu Thap Boek, at 1,768 metres the highest point in Phetchabun and one of Thailand's celebrated 'unseen' natural wonders. As the sun lifts, an endless sea of mist pools in the valleys below and the cabbage-terraced slopes of the Hmong highlands glow gold. It is the kind of dawn that justifies the early alarm.

Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park — Pha Chu Thong & Lan Hin Pum
We drive on to Phu Hin Rong Kla, a national park layered with both natural drama and modern history. A short walk leads to Pha Chu Thong, the dramatic 'Flag Cliff' viewpoint, and to Lan Hin Pum, a field of strange knobbled sandstone where vivid green moss traces the rock. The forest paths are gentle and the scenery quietly spectacular.

Khao Kho wind-turbine plateau
Descending the mountain, we stop along Route 12 for coffee with a view, then continue to the Khao Kho wind-turbine field. Standing some 1,050 metres above sea level across a broad ridge-top plateau, the slow-turning white turbines make one of Khao Kho's signature landscapes, with views that stretch far across the surrounding ranges.

Hydrangea Cafe
We finish the day at the Hydrangea Cafe, where hillsides of purple margaret daisies and hydrangeas bloom across the cool months, roughly October through December. It is a relaxed spot to soak up the mountain air before returning to your accommodation.

Phra Borommathat Chedi Kanchanaphisek
Crowning a Khao Kho ridge, this golden royal stupa was built to mark the Golden Jubilee of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. We pay our respects here for good fortune, with panoramic views opening out across the highlands.

After lunch we visit the Khao Kho Royal Palace, set atop Khao Ya, the highest peak of Khao Kho. The gardens are planted with a wonderful variety of trees and flowers, and the summit offers one last sweeping look over the mountains you have travelled through.
