Thailand has over 1,400 islands. Most tourists visit the same dozen. Koh Chang, just 300 km from Bangkok in the Gulf of Thailand near the Cambodian border, consistently delivers what many travellers are actually looking for: beautiful beaches, jungle waterfalls, excellent seafood and a relaxed atmosphere without the mass tourism of Koh Samui or Phuket.
The Beaches
White Sand Beach (Hat Sai Khao) is the longest and most developed — still peaceful by Thai island standards, with clear shallow water good for swimming. Lonely Beach on the southwest coast has kept its backpacker soul: hammocks, fire shows and the most laid-back vibe on the island.
For complete privacy, Klong Kloi Beach in the south is barely developed — a few beach chairs, one restaurant, and water so clear you can see the sand 3 metres down.
Khlong Plu Waterfall
Koh Chang’s interior is dense national park jungle — 70% of the island is protected. The 25-metre Khlong Plu Waterfall is the most accessible, with a natural pool at the base perfect for swimming. A 20-minute walk from the road entrance. Entrance fee ฿200.
Snorkelling and Diving
The islands around Koh Chang — particularly Koh Wai and Koh Rang — have some of the best coral in the Gulf of Thailand. Day trips by speedboat from White Sand Beach depart daily and cost ฿800–1,200 per person including snorkelling equipment and lunch.
Getting There
The easiest route: fly to Bangkok, take a minivan to Laem Ngop pier (5 hrs from Bangkok, or 45 min from Trat if you fly there), then a 30-minute ferry to the island. We Go Round combines Koh Chang with Bangkok or the ancient city of Chanthaburi (famous for sapphires and stunning French colonial architecture) in our Eastern Thailand itineraries.
