AYUTTHAYA & THE PLAINS

Central Thailand
History, Temples & River Plains

Why Central Thailand?

Central Thailand is Siam’s living history book — Ayutthaya’s temple ruins, Lopburi’s monkey-guarded Khmer prangs, and Khao Yai’s ancient rainforest, all within three hours of Bangkok. For travellers with limited time who still want real depth, this is where centuries of history and untouched nature sit closest to the capital.

Central Thailand for Slow Travellers

Central Thailand rewards travellers who don’t rush the ruins. Sit at a single Ayutthaya wat until the light changes and the crowds thin. Let Lopburi’s monkeys go about their business while you wait for the Khmer prangs to empty out. This is Siam’s heartland, where thousands of years of continuous history means there is always another temple, another quiet hour, if you are willing to slow down and find it.

Best Time to Visit Central Thailand

Central Thailand’s climate follows Bangkok — here is what to expect each season.

Nov · Dec · Jan · FebMar · Apr · MayJun · Jul · Aug · Sep · Oct
Nov – Feb

Cool & Dry

22–30°C. The best months — pleasant for walking ruins and wildlife dawn-walks in Khao Yai. Peak season; book ahead.

Mar – May

Hot Season

Hot and increasingly humid, 33–38°C in April. Trips work well with early starts and midday rest. Fewer crowds at ruins than the peak.

Jun – Oct

Green Season

Afternoon rains, but mornings are usually clear. Waterfalls in Khao Yai at full flow. Ruins are lush and atmospheric. Crowds low, prices good.

Year-Round

Always Open

Ayutthaya and Lopburi’s temple sites work in any weather. Khao Yai wildlife is most active October–November, right after the rains end.

Bangkok: Your Gateway

Every itinerary on this page starts in Bangkok, Thailand’s capital and main international gateway. Before heading out to Ayutthaya’s ruins or Khao Yai’s rainforest, most travellers spend a day or two in the city itself — the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, the riverside spires of Wat Arun, the canals of Thonburi, and some of the best street food in the world.

We build every Central Thailand itinerary around your Bangkok base, whether that’s a hotel by the river or an airport-side stay before an early departure.

Lopburi

Khmer prangs overrun by macaque monkeys, King Narai’s 17th-century palace and a town that has been continuously inhabited for 3,000 years. One of Thailand’s most underrated day trips.
