The journey

Most itineraries in Thailand move fast: a temple this morning, a beach tomorrow, a new hotel every second night. This one does the opposite. You settle into three home-bases — Chiang Mai for the first week, a quiet valley town in the deep north for the second, and the warm, largely unvisited region of Isan for the third — and let each one unfold at the pace of a person, not a schedule.

Mornings are gentle. Afternoons are yours. There is a local host you'll come to know, an English-speaking guide who is never more than a phone call away, and a rhythm built around rest, real culture, and quiet wellness rather than a checklist. Nothing is mandatory. The elephant sanctuary, the cooking class, the morning yoga — all are offered, none are compulsory.

We have been running private journeys in Thailand since 2009. We designed this trip because experienced travelers kept coming back and saying the same thing: "We want more time in fewer places." This is the answer to that conversation.

Week by week

Week 1 · Days 1–7 Chiang Mai — Arrive, Slow Down, Belong

Day 1 · ArrivalA soft landing, the right way

Private airport greeting — no queues to navigate alone. A calm transfer to your boutique base inside the old city. Nothing planned but a welcome dinner of gentle Northern dishes whenever you're ready. We hand you a local SIM, a 24/7 contact card, and a short "first 48 hours" briefing — the things that quietly remove stress before they become problems.

Days 2–3 · Culture & FlavourThe city at conversation pace

A slow morning walk through temples and back lanes — not a march, but a stroll with places to sit and stories worth hearing. A half-day market-to-table cooking session at an organic farm, unhurried, seated, and as hands-on as you wish. Lunch at a family Northern kitchen with dietary needs arranged in advance.

Local detail: We choose a farm that runs small groups (never more than eight), provides shaded seating, and handles the door-to-door transport. Comfort matters as much as the recipe.

Day 4 · WildlifeEthical elephants, the right way

A full day at a genuine observe-only sanctuary in the hills — no riding, no bathing performances, no hooks. Watch these animals as they actually live. Among the most moving days of the trip, consistently.

Days 5–6 · Wellness & SpaceRestore and wander freely

A morning of gentle yoga or guided meditation at a quiet temple garden, followed by a traditional Thai massage. Then a completely free day — your guide offers a short menu of options (craft workshop, café crawl, quiet museum) and you choose, or you simply rest. Both are equally valid.

Day 7 · TransitionSunday slow — pack at leisure

An early, gentle visit to a hill temple for the morning light. Then nothing at all. Pack without rushing for tomorrow's drive north.

Week 2 · Days 8–14 The Northern Valley — Quiet, Craft & Nature

Day 8 · Into the hillsThe drive most visitors never take

A scenic, unhurried drive — with stops you actually want — to a small valley town that few foreign travelers ever reach. Think Nan, Mae Hong Son, or a hidden Lanna village, chosen to match your group's interests. This is the "real Thailand" that second-time travelers come searching for.

Why this matters: The entire second week is built around the idea that the best experiences in Thailand are not in a guidebook — they're introduced by a local who trusts you enough to share them.

Days 9–10 · Living CraftMeet the makers in their workshops

Spend time with weavers and artisans — silver smiths, indigo dyers, or hand-loom weavers — in their own workshops, not a tourist demonstration. Try the craft yourself, guided by the maker. The region's most beautiful temples, visited slowly and almost alone, with history told as a story rather than a lecture.

Day 11 · Farm & TableA morning with a local family

Coffee, rice, or seasonal fruit — whatever the land is producing — and a long, shared lunch in a family home. Your visit supports the family directly. This is regenerative travel: quietly doing good while eating extremely well.

Days 12–13 · Nature & RestA gentle day out and a day entirely in

An easy riverside walk, a waterfall, or a boat journey — graded to comfort, never to challenge. Then a full free day in the valley. Read, write, nap, wander the market. The whole point of a trip like this lives in days like this one.

Day 14 · TransitionFly to the heart of Isan

A short domestic flight — we handle every step of the logistics — toward Thailand's warmest, least-touristed region. Arrive by afternoon.

Week 3 · Days 15–21 Isan — Warmth, Food & Farewell

Days 15–16 · Arrival & RuinsSilk, ancient Khmer, and big skies

A gentle orientation to a region most Western travelers have never even heard of: Isan. The land of silk, ancient Khmer temple complexes, the finest food in Thailand, and the friendliest people you'll meet anywhere. An optional sunrise visit to a thousand-year-old temple complex — the equal of Angkor's outliers, without the crowds.

Day 17 · Living CultureThe silk road, from silkworm to loom

A full day with a silk-weaving village — from the cocoon to the finished cloth. You'll have the chance to take home something made by hands you've personally shaken. One of the more quietly powerful days of the journey.

Day 18 · FoodThe Isan kitchen — the meal they'll talk about for years

A relaxed cooking session with a local cook who loves to teach: som tam, sticky rice, grilled everything, the herbs that grow at the back of every house. Isan food is Thailand's soul food. Most tours skip this region entirely. Your guests will be telling this story for the next decade.

Local detail: We pre-arrange all dietary requirements. The session is fully seated, unhurried, and ends with a shared meal — not a timed class.

Days 19–20 · Rest & FarewellAn open day, then the long table

A completely free day — market, spa, pool, a good book. Then a private farewell dinner with the hosts and guides you've come to know over three weeks. By this point they are not staff; they are people you will stay in touch with. The closest thing to leaving friends.

Day 21 · DepartureUntil next time

An unhurried private transfer to the airport, with everything handled. Most guests are already asking about next year before the car reaches the terminal.

Good to know

Who is this journey designed for?

The Slow North is built for curious, experienced travelers — typically couples or small groups aged 45–65 — who want to understand a country rather than collect sights. You've probably done a trip to Thailand before and felt you only scratched the surface. This is the antidote to that. It also works beautifully for a milestone birthday or anniversary trip with close friends, or for adult children traveling with parents who want a genuinely comfortable pace.

When is the best time to travel?

November through February: cool, dry, and the finest weather of the year in both the North and Isan. Mornings in the northern valleys can be genuinely cool — a cardigan at breakfast, t-shirts by lunch. It's also the season when you're swapping a grey European or North American winter for blue skies and warm afternoons. We run the trip year-round; May–October is green season with afternoon showers, lower prices, and fewer visitors.

How physical is this trip? We're not hikers.

Not physical at all. Most days have one gentle, unhurried activity and a free afternoon. Walking is on flat ground or short, gentle paths — no mountains, no jungle trekking unless you specifically request it. The elephant sanctuary is the most active day, and it involves standing on flat ground watching elephants move freely. The only optional active element is a riverside walk in week two — and even that can be swapped for a boat. This is a deeply comfortable journey.

How far ahead should we book?

For the November–February season, we recommend enquiring 3–4 months in advance. Boutique properties in the northern valley book out early, and your private guide needs to be reserved. We send a full, detailed proposal within 48 hours of your first message — with accommodation options at all price points, a suggested itinerary, and a clear price. No obligation, no sales pressure.

This journey is designed for your group alone.

No other guests, no fixed departure dates, no compromises on pace or preference. Send us a message and we'll have a full proposal back to you within 48 hours.
